WHAT IS PREP?
PrEP is what pre-exposure prophylaxis treatment is commonly known as. It is a once-daily preventive pill against HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), whose side effects are minor and only occur in a minority group of people, making PrEP the best strategy to avoid HIV infection in the case of high-risk practices. It is important to remember that while PrEP is effective against HIV, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STDs) and should be combined with condom use. The PrEP pill is also known by the trade name Truvada and by the generic names Ricovir-EM, Tenvir-EM, Tenof-EM and Tavin-EM.They are approved for use as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and Tenof-EM is also approved for PeP (post-exposure prophylaxis). PrEP is not a vaccine, neither is it a cure for HIV.
